Cube & Dimension Configuration¶
ControlWORQ can be configured to work with any Planning Analytics cubes. This is normally done by a Planning Analytics administrator who also understands the business needs of the organization. The configuration of ControlWORQ, thus, comes after required cubes and dimensions have been created within Planning Analytics.
Key Configuration Concepts¶
The following information is required when configuring cubes and dimensions for use in ControlWORQ.
Planning Analytics Object Structure & Naming Conventions¶
ControlWORQ does not impose a cube structure on the Planning Analytics developer or administrator. There is also no requirement around the names of the dimensions and cubes that you use in your Planning Analytics application. ControlWORQ supports any dimension and cube naming conventions, so choose the naming convention that makes the most sense for your Planning Analytics solution.
Cube Configuration Limitations¶
The only restrictions on Planning Analytics cubes that can be used in ControlWORQ is around cubes that will be used for Intercompany Reconciliation and Eliminations. Those cubes must have company and partner company dimensions which are used to capture balances between different companies. Those dimensions should share a common element or alias that identifies the same company on each side of an intercompany balance (e.g., Company: 001 New York should have a corresponding Partner Company: 001 New York). Each cube must also have an Account dimension defined.
As noted above, ControlWORQ does not require specific names for Company, Partner Company, Account and any other dimensions or cubes used by ControlWORQ.
Dimension Configuration¶
When configuring a cube for use in ControlWORQ you must specify, for each dimension, how that dimension will be used when creating and posting journal entries to Planning Analytics. Specifically, each dimension's type must be identified:
Journal Dimensions¶
These are dimensions whose elements are selected for each line of a journal entry. The accounts dimension must always be configured as a Journal dimension, and you can have more than one Journal Dimension for a cube, for example if you need to post entries that span cost centers.
Header and Session Dimensions¶
These are dimensions whose elements are selected once for each journal entry. Session dimensions are a sub-category of header dimensions whose elements are only selected once per journal entry posting session. Dimensions like Version, Currency and Time are typically configured as session dimensions, since this designation will save time for people entering the same version and time period for multiple entries.
Other Configuration Settings¶
All configuration information for ControlWORQ is maintained in the underlying relational database. When you configure cubes and users in ControlWORQ that information is stored in a series of tables and retrieved when users access the ControlWORQ server. In addition to identifying cubes and dimensions in ControlWORQ, ControlWORQ also allows you to specify Planning Analytics element attributes and other settings that define your Planning Analytics application and its integration with ControlWORQ.
Element attributes need not be created in advance; ControlWORQ will create them automatically as part of the configuration process.
💡 Tip: ControlWORQ automatically creates required Planning Analytics objects during configuration, making setup easier for administrators.
